Sydney to Hobart for Kids who are Deaf and Hearing Impaired

Dr Hugh Torode and his crew competed in this year's Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race with, not only a passion for sailing, but the determination to raise over $20,000 for The Shepherd Centre charity for children who are deaf and hearing impaired.
Dr Torode’s son, Will, was born with a hearing impairment and attended The Shepherd Centre where he learnt how to listen and speak.
“As part of my continued support for the amazing work The Shepherd centre does, I changed the name of my yacht to ‘Shepherd Centre’ for the Sydney to Hobart race,” said Dr Torode. “My crew and I were very proud to represent The Shepherd Centre again for a second year in the race to raise vital funds help the charity continue to change the lives of children who are deaf and hearing impaired, and their families.”
Belinda and Chris Button, whose youngest son Louis was referred to The Shepherd Centre after being diagnosed with mild-moderate sensorineural hearing loss, visited the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia with Louis and older brother Thomas and sailed on the ‘Shepherd Centre’ vessel and met with Dr Torode and Shepherd Centre CEO Jim Hungerford.
“The Shepherd Centre has been wonderful to Louis and the whole family,” said Belinda “Louis currently attends Audio Verbal Therapy sessions where he’s learning to listen and speak. He also really enjoys socialising, playing and learning new songs at weekly playgroup with all the other kids.”
“We’re very grateful to those people, such as Dr Torode, who raise funds for The Shepherd Centre so they can continue to help children and families.”
