First Sounds Cochlear Implant Program
The First Sounds Cochlear Implant Program is a joint initiative of The Shepherd Centre and Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick. The First Sounds Cochlear Implant Program provides the medical, audiological and therapy services required to support a child and their family prior to and following cochlear implant surgery. These services maximise the benefits of receiving a cochlear implant.
The First Sounds Cochlear Implant Team
Our multidisciplinary team take a family centred approach to achieve the best outcomes for each child. The team of medical staff, paediatric audiologists, auditory-verbal therapists, and family counsellors, work together to support the child and their family through every step of the process.
The program
All children undergo a comprehensive medical, audiological and habilitation (listening, speech and language) assessment when being evaluated for cochlear implantation.
- The cochlear implant program is offered to infants and children aged 0-18 years with severe to profound hearing loss.
- Most appointments to evaluate a child for cochlear implantation are offered at The Shepherd Centre's five centres: Sydney, Roseville, Wollongong, Liverpool and Canberra.
- Audiological management and intensive therapy following cochlear implantation, are offered at all of The Shepherd Centre's centres.
- Regular assessments allow each child's progress to be closely monitored following cochlear implantation.
- Infants and pre-school aged children can access The Shepherd Centre's early intervention program which includes playgroup and family support.
What is a cochlear implant system?
A cochlear implant system consists of an internal electrode array (cochlear implant) and an external speech processor. The system may offer better access to sound where little or no benefit is received from hearing aids.
How does a cochlear implant work
The electrode array is inserted into the cochlear during surgery. When programmed, the speech processor worn by the children picks up and processes the sound. This signal is then transmitted to the internal system activating the electrode array and stimulating the auditory nerve. With ongoing audiological management and intensive therapy the child is taught to listen to the signal. This assists the child to hear the sounds required to learn to listen and speak.
